Begun in 2005 and for our greatest delight, the renovation of the Villa Bahia, has unveiled hidden relics from the early era of Portuguese colonisation. Working in strict compliance with the original foundations, the work required:
• 2 architects, a structural engineer and 1 year of employment for local artisans - approx. 70 people.
• 50 tons of rubble have been removed from both buildings and carried away in small bags at night (according to UNESCO requirement).
• An acoustics specialist was contracted to soundproof the hotel whilst conserving the original doors, windows and wooden floorboards.
• An onsite archaeologist was responsible for recording all the discovered artefacts.
• Close collaboration with the city's Historical Monuments Service was upheld throughout the renovation.
